The self is set in motion in the presence of the other: an existential reading from Emmanuel Levinas
Abstract
Existential psychology understands the human being not as an isolated individual but as an essentially relational being. From this perspective, the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas offers one of the most profound ethical proposals of the 20th century by asserting that the self does not emerge solely from self-knowledge, but rather in the encounter with the Other. This article develops the idea that the presence of the other sets the self in motion: it transforms the way we understand ourselves, awakens ethical responsibility, and offers a philosophical foundation for understanding existential psychotherapy as a space of encounter rather than a corrective process, where the other can reveal themselves without being reduced to our preconceived categories. Finally, the implications of this understanding are reflected upon both in the consulting room and in everyday human relationships.
